Why water & dirt should be you biggest concern?

IBCs and barrels are often used to store substances such as ester oils so that they can be used when required. These oils are highly hygroscopic, i.e. they literally attract moisture.


Up to the saturation point of the oil, water is present as dissolved water and is not visible to the naked eye. Under pressure or with temperature fluctuations, this water emulsifies or so-called free water is formed. This is particularly harmful for lubrication systems as the incompressibility of the water removes the hydrodynamic oil film that protects the bearings. Excessive wear is the result.


Water also reduces the durability of the oil by accelerating oxidation and breaking up the hydrocarbon chains. Oil containing additives is even more susceptible to water contamination. The additives and water react to form acids that increase corrosion in machinery.


Preventing the entry of moisture is therefore the top priority in order to store hygroscopic substances for a long time, at low cost and without causing consequential damage to the machines for which these oils are intended. Exactly what our GIEBEL Adsorbers® do!
